Cupcakes, skateboards and MVPs

When we have an idea sometimes it can be hard to scope it into an MVP (minimum viable product) that can be used to test, learn and shape the next iteration. These analogies can help teams prioritize features and requirements to test “just enough” at each phase.
Cupcake – Birthday Cake – Wedding Cake

Each of these is a dessert with key features – cake, frosting, decorations – but the difference is the scale. How many people will be “fed” and how fancy the cake will be are the differentiators.

Skateboard – Bike – Car
Each of these is a mode of transportation that improves the speed with which the user gets where he or she needs to go. Each iteration has more features than its predecessor but delivers on the same user goal – transportation.

What’s your cupcake? How does it scale to a wedding cake? What do you need to test your scooter in the market, with the understanding that someday you want a car? Or maybe you find out that you don’t need the car or wedding cake at all…
